This is a fascinating history, political analysis and warning about an industry we cannot live without. While many still regard coal as the future of America's power plants, its benefits come at a great cost. Goodell is an excellent writer whose energetic prose makes this rock and the people who take it out of the ground come alive on the page.

A harrowing adventure that would stand among the best of its genre even without the overwhelming presence of Theodore Roosevelt. Incredible hardships plague this seemingly cursed expedition; starvation, Indian attacks, disease, drowning, and murder. A well-told and riveting account that also offers some enlightening insight into the mind of our twenty sixth President. Highly recommended.
